How do you check grammar in two languages in one message?

Use a checker that recognizes the language of every sentence instead of the whole text. Private Writing Assistant does this for 101 languages, so an email that switches from English to Spanish has each part checked by the rules of its own language.

Why mixed text trips up most checkers

Many tools work with one language at a time. You pick it in the settings, or the tool guesses it from the text as a whole. Mix two languages and one part is checked against the wrong rules: correct Spanish turns into a row of English spelling mistakes, or the real Spanish mistakes slip through because nothing is checking them.

Yet mixed text is everyday writing for a lot of people. A reply to a colleague abroad with a line for your own team. A quote in its original language. A bilingual announcement. A family chat that switches languages mid-thought.

How per-sentence detection works

Private Writing Assistant splits your text into sentences and recognizes the language of each one, on your device. Every sentence is then checked in its own language. You don't choose anything in advance, and you can switch languages from one sentence to the next.

Before

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll send the files tomorow. Te mando tambien el contrato firmado.

After

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll send the files tomorrow. Te mando también el contrato firmado.

Both mistakes are underlined, each with a suggestion in its own language: “tomorrow” for the English sentence, “también” with its accent for the Spanish one. Hover the badge in the corner of the text box and press Fix all, and both are corrected at once.

Which languages it checks

101 languages, from English, Spanish and German to Hindi, Arabic, Japanese and Swahili. It tells Brazilian and European Portuguese apart and keeps your variant's spelling, so a message from Lisbon isn't “corrected” into Brazilian Portuguese. The extension's own menus are available in 33 languages.

Because detection works sentence by sentence, the combination doesn't matter. German and Turkish, French and Arabic, English and Hindi are all fine. The FAQ lists where it works, from Gmail to Google Docs.

Tips for writing in two languages

Two languages, still private

Language detection and checking both run on your computer with Chrome Built-in AI. A message in two languages is as private as one in one: neither part is sent anywhere. That matters most in the messages people write in two languages, which are often personal ones.

Add Private Writing Assistant to Chrome and write in the languages you actually use, in the same message.
